Can working moms homeschool? With everything going on in the world, many of us are thinking about our children and what is best for them….and if traditional public school is it.  Recently in our Working Christian Mom Facebook community, the topic of homeschooling came up and I am so glad it did because it was in the back of my mind as well.

So, I decided to seek out experts to help us all as we decide if homeschooling is the right choice for us and our families…and if it is, how do we navigate that.

This led me to find Erin Barry of The Home Educated Mind.  God is good!  In this episode, Erin breaks down the different types of homeschool, and how to get started.  In our next episode, we will be joined by a fellow working mom that has taken the journey of homeschooling.  She shares tips for us as a mom that has journeyed down the road before us.  Click here to learn more about this episode.

About Our Guest

Erin has homeschooled her 3 children (and graduated them) plus She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education and a Masters in Clinical Christian Counseling and has taught professionally from pre-K to college.    While it has been statistically proven that being a trained teacher does not make one a better home educator, she believes that her experience in public and private education has given her a fuller understanding of the education world and, therefore,  the unique benefits of homeschooling.   Erin’s passion is to see parents become both encouraged and empowered in their faith in Christ and fully equipped to train and guide their children towards the unique individuals they were created to be.

Action Items and Tips From the Show

During my interview with Erin, she goes through the pros and cons of homeschooling and provides so much grace, inspiration, and knowledge!  I hope you check it out on the podcast.

She also clarified the 4 main different types of homeschooling.

If you feel like the Lord is leading you to homeschool your kids, here is the checklist that Erin walks us through on the podcast.

  1. Pray first.  Ask God to guide you through the process.  You heard Erin mention several times on the podcast how God brought the right people and resources into her path and really equipped her.
  2. Check out the laws and requirements for where you are.  HSLDA.org is a great resource for this.  Also, check out your state’s website.
  3. Start looking at the curriculum.  CathyDuffy.com is a great resource for reviews.  Start with the basics like Math and Reading.  If you feel led to any of the different types of homeschooling, check out these websites:  https://simplycharlottemason.com/  https://www.classicalconversations.com/
  4. Talk with other homeschool moms.  Search on Facebook for local homeschool groups in your area.  They are a great resource and support as you move forward.
