Weight loss can be tough but especially for working moms. Tough, not impossible. In this episode, I am sharing 5 strategies that I have found to be key to my weight loss journey and really these are applicable to any big lifestyle goals that you have for your life.

Over the course of my adult life, I have been on the weight loss roller coaster. This last year, my health focus was on stress management and getting good sleep. Not watching my weight. It caused me to gain 30 lbs and that was effecting me so bad that I needed to make it a priority. I tried so many different programs and products over the years. Some worked and many didn’t. Then I heard someone say “What you do to lose the weight, you better be prepared to do to keep it off.” That made sense to me…..if it brought results. That someone was Amanda Nighbert and she is the creator of the Lean program. I decided to give her program a try because I was done with fad diets and ready to really learn how to fuel my body with whole food nutrition and lose the weight in a way that is sustainable. Guess what? It worked!

The Lean program takes place over 7 weeks and focuses on intermittent fasting, carb cycling, and behavior changes. I loved my results so much from the first 7 weeks, I have started a second round and have partnered with Amanda to tell others about her program. Just to be clear, when I say that I have partnered with her, it means that if anyone decides to give the program a try on my recommendation, then I get a kickback. That isn’t the reason that I am sharing this with you.

A few weeks back we were talking about health goals in our Facebook group. The vast majority of you told me that your number one health goal was weight loss. If I found something that works for me in this area even when I am working late, traveling, and taking care of everything there is to do I can still stick to this program and see results toward my weight loss goals.

Action Items and Tips From the Show

So, here are the 5 strategies I have learned doing this program.  Whether you do the program or not, I think these will really help you.

  1. Know your triggers for making not great choices.  You might have more than one. As you are discovering them, don’t feel like you need to fix them all.  The first step is being aware of what the triggers are, then why they are the triggers. I am not normally a big fan of looking behind into the why we do the things we do.  But in this case, I have found it really helpful for seeing the situation for what it is.

  2. Give yourself limits.  If you listened to last week, then you know what I’m talking about, and I totally used it for my weight loss. This program isn’t just about nutrition, but also about exercise.  We are given three different workouts to choose from. Modified, beginner, or advanced.  I’ll be honest. When I started the 7-week program in January, I wasn’t interested in the workouts.  I just needed to get my eating under control. But as I neared the end of my 7 weeks and I was feeling so much better, I wanted to workout.  But life is still life. I might want to work out, but that doesn’t mean I always have the energy, so I gave myself permission to skip 3 workouts a week.  Now I have started my second 7 week round and I have given myself permission to just miss 2.

  3. Knowing what to do and doing it are two very different things.  There is a lot of information out there on weight loss and I have done just about every program out there. So, it’s not a matter of “knowing what to do”. It comes down to actually doing it.

  4. Sometimes our will can be strong in standing in our own way. While going through this journey I have realized that I have an inner toddler. If you have a toddler (or can remember that stage) then you know what I am talking about. Trying to get a toddler to do something that they don’t want to do is a challenge. They throw a fit, blow things out of proportion, and find very creative ways not to do what they are supposed to do. I do the same thing with drinking water. I know I need to. It’s key to weight loss, but I struggle with this for no other reason than my own will. I see this in other areas of my life. But I have to remember, the toddler is not in control. They don’t get to call the shots.

  5. Honesty is the best policy.  Especially with ourselves. Yep, I tell half-truths to myself. And if I believe anything but the truth it will lead to frustration with my results. Not logging everything that goes in my mouth, not putting forth the best effort during my workouts, and adding coffee to my water count are all working against my weight loss goals. But because I am doing other things that are great, I feel like my results should be great. And if they are not, I get discouraged. But there is a truth and if I am honest with myself, I can see it. Personal accountability and humility are key components to success in all areas of life.
