Episode 184: Weekly Prep For Your Kids

Episode 184: Weekly Prep For Your Kids

We talk a lot about weekly prep here on the show because it is one of the main systems we teach to help you create balance in your life as a working mom.  In fact, if you have not yet grabbed our free course, Weekly Success Planning, I highly recommend that you do.  You can get it inside the Your Life Rocks app on Android or iTunes or go to WeeklySuccessPlanning.com

But let’s face it, a large part of what we do outside of work is for our kids.  So this episode was a long time coming.  In fact, the idea for this show came from our awesome community of other working Christian moms.  Are you a member?  Click here to join us on Facebook.

Action Items and Tips From the Show

Areas to help your kids create balance for:

  • Faith
  • Friends
  • Health
  • Family
  • Education
  • Money
  • Personal responsibility for their things
  • Fun

When doing your planning, here are age recommendations for how much to involve your kids:

  • 0-5 Do for them
  • 6-12-include them
  • 13-17 lead them

Practical tips:

  1. Decide what areas of life are applicable to your kids
  2. Set intentions for each of those areas (involve your kids in the process)
  3. Look at the week ahead and try to spot any potential obstacle that could derail the intentions
  4. Remove any obstacles you can
  5. Prep schedule, people, needs, and things.

Now that we are getting into the thick of this, it’s important to note that there are two purposes here.  1. Teach your kids this life skill. 2. Actually prep for the upcoming week.

If you feel like you are not ready for number one, head straight to number two with no shame.  If you don’t want to involve your kids, you are not ready for that, they are not ready for that or any other reason that you do not need to justify….that is totally fine.

I know that this list sounds long and exhausting.  As moms, we do a lot. And that is why it’s good to involve your kids.  Even if they don’t set the intentions, have them help you do the things.  My older son and I go through his schedule for the week together. He can pull it up on his computer and we go through what he has going on, what he needs, and who is doing what.  It’s a great time of connection. You can also delegate some this to your husband or other caregivers. But you get to direct the show.

So now you get to put this into practice.  You can do this!

Episode 182: Getting Into The Word of God When Life Gets Busy

Episode 182: Getting Into The Word of God When Life Gets Busy

When life gets busy, it’s easy to skip the things we need the most and this includes getting into the word of God.  This week we are giving you strategies to find ways to connect with God, study the word, and keep your faith thriving even in the busiest of seasons.

Action Items and Tips From the Show

  • Let go of what you expect your time with God to look like.  Be open to experiencing him in any way.
  • Make a list of possibilities for you.
    • My sample list:
      1. Morning routine reading the bible
      2. Morning routine prayer walk
      3. Morning routine prayer journal
      4. Shower mediation and prayer
      5. Shower with praise music
      6. Getting ready listening to a sermon
      7. Getting ready listening to worship music
      8. Driving to work with a sermon
      9. Driving to work with an audio bible
      10. Driving to work listening to worship music
      11. Reading the Bible during your lunch break
      12. Watching a sermon during your lunch break
      13. Reading a devotional during your lunch break
      14. Anything you can do during a morning routine you can do during your lunch break
      15. Listen to workshop music while you work
      16. Listen to a sermon while you work
      17. Same ideas coming home from work as going to work
      18. Listen to worship music while you make dinner
      19. Reading your bible before bed
      20. Reading with your kids (God can use the kid’s bible to speak to you too)
      21. Doing a prayer walk after dinner
      22. Prayer journaling before bed

This is a big list, but you get the idea.  When we do number one, it opens us up to so much more.

Ok, so you find the time, then what?  The music part is kind of easy. I love Spotify and have several playlists.  Some of them are built into our courses in the membership (meaning we link to them).  You can find them by searching Your Life Rocks (or click right here). But use whatever music service you want.  You can search for exactly what you need. Pray that God will bring the write songs to speak into your day.

When it comes to sermons, there are many to choose from if you head on over to youtube.  Be careful who you listen to….they let just about anyone start a youtube channel. My two favorites right now are anything by Francis Chan, Transformation church, or Rock Point church.

One of our Life Balance Members was also telling me recently about the Commuter Bible podcast….not that I want you to leave this podcast and go listen to a different one, but it will help you listen to the bible in a year.  I can get behind that.

Let’s talk devotionals.  In our April Lifestyle guide, you’ll find a recommendation list of devotionals to choose from.  The lifestyle guide is new and totally free. You can find it inside the app and learn more about it on yourliferocks.com

But, let’s talk about the Bible.  Yes, do what you can do. But getting into the word of God is where you will find your gold.  That is where you will seek him. He is always seeking you and when you worship or set time aside to do all the other things we talked about, you are opening yourself up to hear from him.  But when you seek after him, want to know him on a deeper level…that is always when God has revealed amazing truths. It’s when I fall deeper in love with who he is. Getting into the Bible is the gold standard.

But can we be real?  It can be hard. Distractions creep in.  of course, they do. The devil does not want you in the word.  That should be a sign that we need to pursue it.

So here are my favorite ways to study the bible.  After all, sometimes a little structure helps. Just promise me that you will Let the spirit lead, not any of these formats.  If the spirit takes you off course, that is ok. More than ok.

My favorite way to study the Bible is topic based.  Our bible study inside the membership is a topic based study.  You have a topic and you are researching it to see what the word says.  The study inside the membership is called Setting Goals in Gods will and will direct you to scripture about the 8 areas of life that we talk about at Your Life Rocks so you can see what he says about it.

But you can use the back of your bible or biblestudytools.com to search topics that are relevant to where you are.  The My Version Bible app has a similar search function as well.

Then when you find your verse.  Go deep. You can use the SOAP method.

  • S is for scripture.  Write it out as you read it.  It will use a different part of your brain
  • O is for observation.  What can you learn from this passage?  What’s interesting or stands out?
  • A is for application.  How does this verse apply to your life?  To your situation? This is the one that I often have to pray about.  Not always, sometimes it is plain as day but other times, I want God to take me deeper.  To show me new parts of me and new parts of him.
  • P is for prayer.  Praying over what you have experienced with the verse and I always ask God to keep it marinating in me.  To reveal new things throughout the day. To show me how it applies to my life and to help me to be obedient to it.

There are many acronyms that get you a similar result.  Power, reap, 5 P’s

Pick what suits you and when you want something fresh, go with a new one.  Seriously, go to Pinterest and type in Bible study methods. Find a pretty picture that summarizes one and take a screenshot and make it your wallpaper on your phone to remind you.

However you approach bringing God into your day, I pray that you give one of these ideas a try. He is waiting for you.

Episode 181: How To Organize In Times Of Chaos With Monique Horb

Episode 181: How To Organize In Times Of Chaos With Monique Horb

As working moms, we have all been there. Life gets busy or we hit a hard season and the first thing to go out the window are our organization habits.  We hit survival mode.  In this episode, hear from professional organizer Monique Horb on the importance of holding onto your habits in times of chaos and if you have already lost them, we’ll give you the steps to get back on track.

About Our Guest

Monique Horb has a passion for helping women who are busy, tired, and overwhelmed. She does this by organizing homes and paper piles so that women can be more productive, have time and energy to live their purpose and live the life they want. She loves to say, Life Is Easier Organized!

She began her business, Organizing Your Chaos, after experiencing depression, bankruptcy, adoption, marriage, and medical crisis. These things were out of her control, and her home was falling apart. Through twists and turns, she learned that with an organized home she was able to manage.

Monique was raised in southwest Michigan and graduated from Taylor University, a Christian college in Indiana, with a BA in Sociology & Psychology. She met her husband through a friend while working at Spring Hill Camps in Michigan. They have been married for twenty-five years and have six children, two dogs, and a cat. Her life experiences have pushed her out of her comfort zone and shaped the business that she created.

She loves to help women who struggle to get their homes organized.  She knows that the simple (yet difficult) act of getting your home organized gives hope. Hope propels us forward, gives confidence, and allows changes to happen. This can change your life.

When asked, “How do you do it?” she responds, “I get up and get dressed.”

She believes that being willing to take off the mask, ask for help and work hard, alongside faith in God, has changed her life. She continues to help women change their lives, and shares that we are all better when we are in community together.

Action Items and Tips From the Show

How we use our time has affects our family, friends, and work.  This impacts our emotions and relationships. Are you a “plan ahead kind of girl”, or a “fly by the seat of my pants and hope it gets done” kind of girl?  Daily we each choose how we use our time. We get to (yes, we all have something to offer!) impact our world each day. Take a few minutes to answer the following questions.

  • Are you generally on time or running behind?

  • If you generally run behind, how does this make you feel?
  • Do you put things away? Do you use a schedule?
  • How does this affect others and how do they react?
  • How would you feel if you were on time, and how would others feel about you?

Action Steps

  • Weekly appointment with yourself (keep it!)
  • Look at what needs to be done this week only and plan when you will do it
  • Don’t over schedule
  • Schedule self-care (something that fills you up, give you emotional energy)
  • Delegate

Daily Follow-up Steps

  • If it didn’t get done, move it to the next day
  • Put things away every day, everything needs a home
  • Be grateful for what you accomplished, don’t focus on what you didn’t

Benefits of having your time organized

  • You will have more energy when you plan ahead
  • You know when to get things done: groceries, laundry, errands, bill paying
  • You can plan family activities
  • You can plan self-care, so you will be able to care for everyone else

Money

Money is a tool that we use for our needs, wants, fun, and not so fun things.  Money can cause us to feel stressed out, frustrated, and depressed. Money provides feelings of security, joy, and abundance as well as stress, insecurity, and frustration. A few questions to think about how money is impacting you.

  • Are you able to pay your bills? Are you paying your bills on time?

  • Do you “spend” money when you don’t have the money? (Credit cards)
  • Do you plan how you spend your money or are you a reactionary spender?
  • Are you able to save money as well as bless others with your abundance?

Action Steps

  • Create a bill tracker so you know how much money you need
  • Schedule into your month what days you will pay your bills, and pay them
  • Plan a grocery budget, you will save money by eating at home and eat healthier
  • Decide if you really need something, give yourself a waiting period
  • Save money

Benefits of having your money organized

  • You will have less stress
  • You will pay bills on time and eliminate late fees
  • You will have fewer arguments regarding money
  • You can save money
  • You can give and bless others

Less Stress/More energy

When you invest time in planning your week and budget, you can lower your stress level and feel more energized.  Knowing what to expect during the week gives you confidence that you will show up well. Being unprepared and flying by the seat of our pants causes stress, anxiety, arguments. The negative emotions we feel from not being prepared and letting people down can cause frustration, anxiety, depression, and feelings of failure.

The good news is, you get to choose what kind of life you want to live.  You may not be able to change your circumstances overnight, but you can make daily choices that can change the direction of your life.  Choosing to act instead of reacting, this will help to have more control over your stress levels.

  • How would you feel if you weren’t so stressed?

  • What would you do if you had more time and energy?
  • How would your family and work relationships change?

Action Steps

  • Invest time in your weekly planning
  • Honor appointments with yourself
  • Get back up when you don’t follow through (it will happen!)
  • Get necessary sleep

Benefits of Less Stress

  • You will feel better
  • Family and work relationship will improve
  • Less stress about money and schedules
  • More physical and emotional energy
  • Live happier
