Episode 188: How to Take Your Home from Chaotic to Clean with Jenny Welsh

Episode 188: How to Take Your Home from Chaotic to Clean with Jenny Welsh

We have all been there.  The constant mess and chaos of our houses can leave us with overwhelm and guilt and can make us wonder if we have what it takes to make our house our home.  But there is good news!  The state of your house does not define you!  I know, easier said than done.  In this episode, we hear how to make that so with Jenny Welsh.  She shares 3 steps of her Chaotic to Clean Method that will help you bring God back into the state of your home and feel like you have it conquered.

About Our Guest

After 6 years as a working mom, Jenny Welsh took a leap of faith and became a stay at home mom after her third child was born. Like too many women, she felt out of place in her own home and overwhelmed by the clutter. Combining her knack for organization with her experience creating operating procedures and processes, she developed the 7 step Chaotic To Clean method for overcoming the clutter in her home. Now, she teaches moms her people-first home organization method, so they can create space for more of what and who they love.

Action Items and Tips From the Show

A recent study shared that 89% of working moms and 92% of stay at home moms felt overwhelmed by their homes. Those numbers get me fired up! It’s way too high!

Too often we associate our self-worth with the state of our homes. We have been conditioned by film, magazines and social media to identify others’ and our own worth based on our stuff. This is such a big lie. You are NOT defined by your things. Your clutter does not define you.

In the first three steps of Jenny’s 7 step Chaotic To Clean method, we work to shift our mindset away from feeling like we aren’t enough because we don’t have the “right” decor or stuff in our homes and focus on doing more with what we already have.

That one thing is God. Only God can fill the void that we are trying to fill with stuff.

Step 1: Pray

Invite God into your home and into your home organization plans. I like to ask what can I do with what I already have.

This is not about copying a look or style found in a magazine, but about creating a home that is perfect for you to thrive in. So that you can become who God created you to be without distraction.

Step 2: Pause

When we pause and really look at why our clutter keeps collecting, we can develop REAL solutions for maintaining our homes. The goal is no longer to have a clean home because we want to fill a void or feel a certain way about ourselves. The goal is to have a home that serves a purpose (and cleanliness is a by-product of that). So, when we pause, we are asking where in the cleanup process am I getting stuck? What about the way I currently organize my home does NOT work for my family’s needs?

Step 3:  Plan

What are 2-4 things that you want to achieve in your home? How do you want your family, guests and you to feel in your home? What are those words? Now, you can set out to intentionally create THAT. Not someone else’s ideas of what our homes should look like, but exactly what you and your family need today.

This is the step where it’s safe to open up Pinterest. But, not to copy. Maybe for the first time ever, you are looking at Pinterest for inspiration on how to achieve specific things!

Episode 187: Declutter Your Master Bedroom with Monique Horb

Do you have a place to rest and recharge?  What if you had a place that you could go, like in your own house?  Often, our master bedrooms become a dumping ground so the rest of our homes stay put together.  If you are looking for more rest in your life, this just might be a project to tackle.  The great thing is, you can make this process easy or complex.  Today, we are joined by Monique Horb, a professional organizer at Organizing Your Chaos.  She is going to take us through step by step just like she was right there with you cleaning your space.  This is our last part of our Spring Cleaning series, I hope you enjoy!

Steps to organize your Master Bedroom:

Get the full guide plus more tips for organizing your house from Monique by clicking here.

  1. Your vision. How do you want your bedroom to function? Decide what you want to use your bedroom for.
  2. Take out the trash.
  3. Take out the dirty laundry. Use a laundry basket, this will help contain the dirty clothes.
  4. Sort your clothes to decide what you love. Take them all out of your closet and dresser and try them ALL on! Does it FIT, does it FLATTER, is it FUN? Ask yourself, would someone else get more use out of it than me? If so, let it go: share, sell, donate.
  5. Does your closet function well? Do you need to add clothing rods or shelving?  Do you like the doors on or off your closet?  Can you put a dresser in your closet?
  6. Declutter your drawers, tops of dressers, chairs, cabinets, nightstands, and under your bed. Get rid of everything you don’t want or need in your bedroom. You may be surprised at what you have been storing here.
  7. Are you storing things in your bedroom that doesn’t belong? Remove them and put them away.
  8. Do you need furniture or do you have too much furniture? Does it function well or do you need to make changes?
  9. Clean your room!

Action Items and Tips From the Show

How we use our time has affects our family, friends, and work.  This impacts our emotions and relationships. Are you a “plan ahead kind of girl”, or a “fly by the seat of my pants and hope it gets done” kind of girl?  Daily we each choose how we use our time. We get to (yes, we all have something to offer!) impact our world each day. Take a few minutes to answer the following questions.

  • Are you generally on time or running behind?

  • If you generally run behind, how does this make you feel?
  • Do you put things away? Do you use a schedule?
  • How does this affect others and how do they react?
  • How would you feel if you were on time, and how would others feel about you?

Action Steps

  • Weekly appointment with yourself (keep it!)
  • Look at what needs to be done this week only and plan when you will do it
  • Don’t over schedule
  • Schedule self-care (something that fills you up, give you emotional energy)
  • Delegate

Daily Follow-up Steps

  • If it didn’t get done, move it to the next day
  • Put things away every day, everything needs a home
  • Be grateful for what you accomplished, don’t focus on what you didn’t

Benefits of having your time organized

  • You will save time looking for things
  • You will have more energy when you plan ahead
  • You know when to get things done: groceries, laundry, errands, bill paying
  • You can plan family activities
  • You can plan self-care, so you will be able to care for everyone else

Money

Money is a tool that we use for our needs, wants, fun, and not so fun things.  Money can cause us to feel stressed out, frustrated, and depressed. Money provides feelings of security, joy, and abundance as well as stress, insecurity, and frustration. A few questions to think about how money is impacting you.

  • Are you able to pay your bills? Are you paying your bills on time?

  • Do you “spend” money when you don’t have the money? (Credit cards)
  • Do you plan how you spend your money or are you a reactionary spender?
  • Are you able to save money as well as bless others with your abundance?

Action Steps

  • Create a bill tracker so you know how much money you need
  • Schedule into your month what days you will pay your bills, and pay them
  • Plan a grocery budget, you will save money by eating at home and eat healthier
  • Decide if you really need something, give yourself a waiting period
  • Save money

Benefits of having your money organized

  • You will have less stress
  • You will pay bills on time and eliminate late fees
  • You will have fewer arguments regarding money
  • You can save money
  • You can give and bless others

Less Stress/More energy

When you invest time in planning your week and budget, you can lower your stress level and feel more energized.  Knowing what to expect during the week gives you confidence that you will show up well. Being unprepared and flying by the seat of our pants causes stress, anxiety, arguments. The negative emotions we feel from not being prepared and letting people down can cause frustration, anxiety, depression, and feelings of failure.

The good news is, you get to choose what kind of life you want to live.  You may not be able to change your circumstances overnight, but you can make daily choices that can change the direction of your life.  Choosing to act instead of reacting, this will help to have more control over your stress levels.

  • How would you feel if you weren’t so stressed?

  • What would you do if you had more time and energy?
  • How would your family and work relationships change?

Action Steps

  • Invest time in your weekly planning
  • Honor appointments with yourself
  • Get back up when you don’t follow through (it will happen!)
  • Get necessary sleep

Benefits of Less Stress

  • You will feel better
  • Family and work relationship will improve
  • Less stress about money and schedules
  • More physical and emotional energy
  • Live happier

Episode 133: The Weekend Reset

Episode 133: The Weekend Reset

Organizing your home can offer up a world of relief from the middle of chaos. If devoting a weekend to cleaning and organizing your home sounds like an impossible chore, then this is the episode for you. You see, I think organization can be fun, and you’ll feel pretty wonderful afterward too!

It is time for a Weekend Reset. With many of our minds on Spring Cleaning and clearing out the winter clutter, I am offering up a chance for us to start anew. Every now and then we all feel the itch to reorganize and de-clutter. After all, extra stuff tends to lead to extra stress. I have a process for how I like to do a Weekend Reset, but I never put it down on paper. Here is your opportunity to join me in this life-giving process.

Verse of the Week

Psalm 31:27

“She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.”

I usually hesitate to pull from Psalm 31, but I know that this scripture embodies the heart of the Weekend Reset. Here is a chance to hit pause on the rest of your busy life and focus on your home environment. Here’s how you do it!

Tips shared on the show

What is a Reset?

It is not a mass cleaning of your house. Instead, you get to decide what in your life needs to be reset. Whether you clear out the junk in the garage or sort through closets, you are doing the projects on your list that always needed to be done!

Action items from the show

How do you prepare?

Make sure you give yourself a few days to prepare so you can get the most out of the Reset. Go in with a plan in place and with the rest of the household on board. Yes, get your children involved! It’s a Reset for everyone, after all. Think of one or two ways to reward your family for the hard work. Sometimes, structure and organization are their own reward!

Steps to a Successful Weekend Reset

  • Decide what you want to Reset.

    • Choose a time in your cycle where you are at your most energetic!

  • Think about the obstacles that might get in the way.

  • Make a list of the places you will impact.

  • Plan in some downtime so you don’t burn out.

  • Make a playlist for Reset weekend.

    • This is a great way to get your kids involved.

  • Don’t cook!

    • One less thing to worry about!

After your home is reset, it is important to think about planning in some time for yourself. Listening to this podcast is a great step in the right direction! After a Weekend Reset, I think everyone will breathe a sigh of relief!

Episode 103: Maintaining Your Home and Sanity as a Working Mom

SUBSCRIBE TO the show BY CLICKING one of the BUTTONS BELOW!

We are all about action here at Your Life Rocks and in this podcast episode, we are talking about housework.  While cleaning the house might not be as big of a priority as being a mom, wife, your time with God, or your career but it is something that has a big impact on these things.

When things are a mess it can cause guilt, distraction, and a lack of focus on the priorities of life.  I have also noticed that my kids function better when the house is picked up and in order.  There is less chaos around them and they can focus on the things that matter most to them.

We know it’s important, but where do you find the time?  In this episode, I share three tips to help you with this.

1.  Batch clean.  Trying to find time after work to clean the house is rough and can be a disaster waiting to happen.  Some experts believe that taking the tasks and spreading them out can help prevent overwhelm, but sometimes we just need to focus on the task and get it done.  There is a time to clean and a time to be with family and rest (or drive the kids around to all their functions and your functions after work).  This is why I am a big believer in batch cleaning.  First, cleaning and picking up are different things.  Cleaning is like, really cleaning.  If you can hire a housecleaner to do your deeper cleaning for you, awesome.  They will come and batch clean your home.  If you can’t, you can do it yourself (and with the help of family) on the weekends.  For me, it’s part of my Weekly Success Planning and Sunday prep.  I have created a cleaning checklist to include in your weekend prep and you can find it inside the Life Balance Membership in the Home section.

2. Pick up 20 things.  Like I said before, cleaning is different than picking up.  Picking things up each day keeps the house in order.  But again, it can seem overwhelming when you have to rush to work in the morning or are exhausted after work.  But if you just picked up 20 things you would see a big difference without a lot of time or effort.  Plus, it can be a fun game for your kids too.  See who can pick up 20 things the fastest.  Tell them to pick up 20 things before they play.  Tell yourself to pick up 20 things before you leave a room or sit down to watch tv.

3.  Multitask your cleaning.  So when you are batch cleaning, find things you can do that multitask your time.  Most weekends, I power clean.  Meaning that I set a timer, turn on music and clean as fast as I can.  It’s about getting a workout in while you are cleaning house.  If you want to take a slower approach, listen to an audiobook or podcast while you clean.  Audiobooks are a game changer.  Did you know you can get a free audiobook from Audible by going to audibletrial.com/yourliferocks  (Audible is a sponsor for the podcast and when you start your free trial I do get a commission from the company….but I have been a customer for years and have always recommended them without payment.  Thank you for supporting the show!)

Need some more guidence?  I have a full endepth tool for you inside Life Balance Membership.  It includes a cleaning checklist with items marked that are great for power cleaning, delegating to the kids, or multi tasking.  I also include how to work in the bigger cleaning projects and how to fit it all into your weekend routine.  It’s just one of the many tools inside Life Balance Membership.  In addition, you get the time management course, Life Balance along with the Life Balance Digital Planner and so much more.  You can try it out for free for 7-days by going to LifeBalanceMembership.com

Happy cleaning!
