Episode 273: Hope For Things To Come, Why Goal Setting Is Important

Episode 273: Hope For Things To Come, Why Goal Setting Is Important

In this episode, we are talking about 3 reasons why it’s important to set goals for the new year (even if you are nervous about doing it), plus, 3 ways you can enter into goal setting in a careful way.  If you are like me, I find myself setting some of the same goals over and over and getting stuck.  Doubt, skeptical, loss of hope…but it doesn’t have to be that way!  Listen and learn what to do if you find yourself in that same spot.

Plus, at the end, I’m sharing some of the changes coming for Your Life Rocks in 2021.

Action Items and Tips From the Show

Why Setting Goals Are Important

  1. To set a goal is to pray for something.  When we set goals with God in mind, we are presenting the desire of our hearts to him.  The Bible tells us to pray….about everything and not to give up in our prayer.
  2. Goals give you a direction.  Life is not stagnant.  We are always moving in a direction and without a goal and a plan…you might end up where you really don’t want to be.
  3. Goals set a good example to those around us.  AKA, your kids.

Be careful with your goals.

  1. Don’t let your goal become an idol.
  2. Set yourself up for success or change your goal.  If you have more reasons not to do what is necessary to reach the goal than you have to reach the goal, you are sabotaging yourself before you even begin.
  3. Hold your goals loosely and if God wants to do something different, let him.

Episode 257: 5 Steps To Excel In Your Next Career Move As A Working Christian Mom with Sonia Cameron

Episode 257: 5 Steps To Excel In Your Next Career Move As A Working Christian Mom with Sonia Cameron

Going through a change of careers, companies, or even just growing where you are, takes a solid action plan to get to where you want to go.  In this episode, we are joined by author and fellow working mom, Sonia Cameron as she shares 5 tips to help you prepare for your next career transition.

About Our Guest

Sonia H. Cameron is a published author and blogger that writes to encourage career individuals in transition. Her goal is to inspire those wanting more out of their life’s purpose to find the job of their dreams.

Born in Wilmington, NC, Sonia has worked in corporate America for over 25 years, with her current position placing her at an information technology firm in Research Triangle Park, NC. Throughout her career, Sonia has experienced numerous peaks and valleys, leading to several transition periods. During these times of transition, Sonia learned key principles and discovered necessary tools to help her excel every time.

As a result of wanting to share her experiences to encourage and empower those in similar situations, Sonia began blogging about job hunting and career enhancement. She began sharing her story on her blog Bless the Work in 2010, with the most viewed page being her encouragement blog section. This blog would eventually create an avenue for Sonia to publish her first article for Christian Devotions in 2014.

Sonia’s most recent project is a book released on Amazon in May 2020.  The book, titled God, Please Help Me Find A Job: 21 Prayers for the Job Seeker is a guide aimed to assist readers in seeking the face of God so that they can make the right decision when it comes to procuring job opportunities.

When she’s not writing, Sonia loves to spend time with her husband and blended family; she loves to cook equally as much as she cooks to love.

5 Tips For Acing The Job Search Process

  1. Rehearse your WINs from the past–Write down detailed stories of how you had success in your past positions. How you saw it benefit your employer. How you created a WIN for the customer as well as for yourself and your firm. This will help you have material for your interview and give you confidence that you are a viable candidate
  2. Take a baby step every day towards your career goal. Faith without works is dead according to James. You don’t have to do a lot of work to make a change..a little a day is enough. Consistency is the name of the game. If you don’t know where to start, use my 21 days of preparation checklist –provided to the podcast…or you can retrieve it from my website blessthework.com
  3. Pick a scripture to encourage yourself. Make it your mantra. Post it everywhere in your house and in your car. Carry it in your wallet. When you think you might lose your mind, use the scripture to remind you of God’s promises and to center and calm you.
  4. Dare to dream BIG. How can you find your dream job if you don’t have a dream? Take the time to intentionally dream. This will help you develop a strategy of who what when and where you feel you will succeed. Mustard seed faith is all you need.
  5. This is the best one of all! It is wise to spend at least 5 minutes a day communicating with God. Talking and Listening. Tune into the frequency of God within you to receive guidance and direction. God has a plan specifically for you and the only way to tap into that plan is to have a relationship with Him. Practice spending time in His presence. This is where my book comes in. God, Please Help Me Find A Job will prompt you in prayer about your situation.

Episode 255: Renew and Reclaim 2020

Episode 255: Renew and Reclaim 2020

I think it’s time to renew our minds and reclaim 2020 for the Lord.  This year so far has been a doozy.  But it’s time for us to live by faith and not be consumed by the things of this world.

In the past when I thought of “the things of the world”, I thought of thinks like my goals, my ambition….not they are bad but it is easy to be consumed by them.  But right now it’s things like the upcoming election, Covid-19, the kid’s school situation, civil unrest….

These things are consuming but I am reminded that while these are big things that can have an impact on our lives, they don’t change Jesus.  They don’t change the power of the Spirit.  They don’t change our salvation or the call on my life or yours according to the will of God.

So, to be renewed, we need to focus on the things that are eternal.  Let’s reclaim this year.  Let’s shift our focus and be the light for others.

Action Items and Tips From the Show

Here are your practical steps to put into action what we discussed on the show

  1. Lay it all down.  Ask yourself, “What is consuming me right now?”
  2. Commit your focus to the Lord for the next 90-days.  Let him be the filter in which you respond to the world around you.
  3. Focus each area according to his will.  This is why we have a Bible study inside Life Balance Membership called Setting Goals in God’s will.  In the study, we go through scriptures for each area of life to see God’s will for that area.  This allows us to set goals that are aligned with him and his will.
  4. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in the process of renewal.  Romans 8:26-27 reads: “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses.  For we do not know what we should pray for as we out, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groaning which cannot be uttered.  Now who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”
  5. Get in community and fellowship as you walk this out for the remainder of the year.

Episode 254: Helping Your Tween Explore Their Faith

Episode 254: Helping Your Tween Explore Their Faith

Today we are joined by the Authors of Honest Answers: Exploring God Questions with Your Tween, Janelle Alberts, and Ingrid Faro.  Even if you are not the moms of tweens, the knowledge shared about presenting the Gospel to our kiddos is priceless.  Although we raise our kids in the church, they will go through their own journey to come and find the Lord.  Listen in to this conversation to learn how to apply grace, plant seeds of hope, and be there for your kids without being their savior (this was a big take away for me!)

About Our Guests

Janelle Alberts spent her early career in PR departments for Microsoft and UPS, boiling down logical, clear corporate messaging. She now attempts the same for parents who love Scripture, often featuring bits we’ve never heard but wish we had. Alberts wrote her first faith column for the Akron Beacon Journal in 2010 and has since been a regular contributor to various online sites including Christianity Today’s Gifted for Leadership, RELEVANT magazine, and others. Honest Answers is her first book. Alberts and her family make their home in Ohio.

Ingrid Faro is dean of academic affairs and associate professor of Old Testament at Northern Seminary. She is also an associate professor of Old Testament at the Scandinavian School of Theology in Sweden. She has an MDiv and Ph.D. from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Faro is an international speaker at conferences and churches and writes on topics that include navigating evil and suffering, abuse and power dynamics, women in the Bible, forgiveness, the goodness of God, identity in Christ, discipleship, and leadership. Her motivation is to encourage people, help them navigate the pain and suffering of this world, and grow in a thriving relationship with God and others. She is the coauthor of Honest Answers. Faro has two married children and three grandchildren. She lives in Illinois.
