Tips From The Show

  • Make Your Moments Count
    • Instead of stealing small moments and feeling guilty about them, own it! Instead of hiding in a closet with a bar of chocolate scrolling through your phone, what could you intentionally be doing to restore your energy?
    • You could take a 20-minute shower, or you could take a restorative 20-minute bath
    • You could spend time on social media comparing yourself to others, or you could read a chapter of a book that you love
    • You can sit on the couch with your kids while they watch a movie, and you can pop an earbud in and listen to your own podcast while you all snuggle
  • Fulfill Your Kids’ Needs First
    • If you meet your kids’ needs first, then you will be better able to focus and get some productive work time without interruption.
    • Make sure that everyone has snacks and a drink, has gone to the bathroom and has had a chance to connect with you and share any stories that they want to tell you.
    • Spend some time creating an inviting play set up for your kids, but then you don’t have to stick around for the actual playing. Get them intrigued, and then you can step away to get some work done.
  • Communicate Professionally while Working from Home
    • Respond quickly. When people don’t hear back from you, they start to make up their own reasons that you might not be responding. You don’t have to give the full answer right away, but a quick message to let them know that you received their message and are on top of things can go a long way!
    • Don’t overshare. I understand the urge to explain the craziness of your everyday life, but it just doesn’t belong in a professional setting. I have answered plenty of emails while breastfeeding a baby or watching my kids play at the playground, but no one needed to know that.
    • Calmly handle interruptions. Pretend your kids are your little coworkers who pop into your office with questions. We have some tips for handling those situations!

Episode 278: Finding Work That Fits Your Life with Kathryn Sollmann

Episode 278: Finding Work That Fits Your Life with Kathryn Sollmann

Work-life is a huge part of who we are and how we spend our time as a working mom.  Have you ever considered making your career fit the life that you want to live?  After 2020, many of us were able to find more flexible work situations that we didn’t have before.  But did you know that there are many of other ways of finding flexible work that fits your life?  In this episode, I am joined by Kathryn Sollmann a career coach that specializes in helping women find work that fits their life.

About Our Guest

Kathryn Sollmann is a career coach, speaker and author of the book, Ambition Redefined: Why the Corner Office Doesn’t Work for Every Woman & What to Do Instead (Nicholas Brealey Publishing, Oct 2018).

Kathryn Sollmann is a recognized leader in helping women navigate the many stages of work and life. Through her blog and coaching firm, 9 Lives for Women, she is one of few voices strongly encouraging women to always work—at every age and life stage—to achieve long-term financial security.

With good humor, no-nonsense delivery and the ability to educate and motivate, Kathryn is a frequent speaker, and an inspirational voice for women in college to retirement years. A frequent media resource, her expertise has been called upon by The Today Show, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Money, CNBC & more.

Action Items and Tips From the Show

  1. First, know what kind of flexibility you are looking for in your work.  There are several kinds of flexibility from work hours, work location, and workload. From there, look at the six different kinds of having that flexibility (from part-time work to job sharing) if you want a paycheck from an employer and the 7th option is to start your own business.
  2. Once you have decided the kind of work that will fit your life, the next step is to get it.  Start with where you are.  Have an open conversation with your boss with what you would like to do and be prepared to show them how it will benefit the company.  Be open to a trial period to show how you can deliver the results while still having flexibility.
  3. If you decide to take on the second job of finding a new career path, the best thing you can do is network, network and network even more.  This is the key to find flexible opportunities that aren’t as broadly advertised and to get insider info on which companies truly have flexible work cultures.  If you decide to go that route, check out Kathryn’s website for resources.

Episode 261: Get Your Second Wind To End The Year Strong In Your Career

Episode 261: Get Your Second Wind To End The Year Strong In Your Career

With everything that has gone on this year, many of us feel like we might just be in survival mode….not thriving mode.  When this happens, our goals and intentions can go out the window.  Our time gets used just getting the minimum done and hoping for the best.

This is especially true with our work, especially if you are working from home or having another big shift in what is normal for you.  For example, you might not be working from home, but maybe the pandemic has brought on new urgent projects, or policy changes that require you to work much more differently.

In a perfect world, we would have adequate time to adjust and really only be facing one big change at one time.  That is not the case this year.  Instead, we find ourselves facing a lot of change all at once from multiple areas of life.

Quite frankly, it’s exhausting.

But as time has gone on over the last few months, I feel more and more ready to start being intentional again.  I don’t want to just fly by the seat of my pants hoping for the best.  It’s not good for my mind, my emotions, or the bigger vision that I have for all areas of my life…especially my career.

So how do we get the intentionality back?

That is what we are going to talk about today.

  1. Reevaluate your career.  Now is a perfect time to reflect on where you are compared to where you want to be.  Are you doing what you want to do?  Are you with the right company?  I have heard from many women that have decided they really like working from home and want to do that permanently.  Others might have always dreamed about working from home, but now that they get to do it…they miss the office and having a division in-home/career time.

A big mistake we can make is to settle and think that “this is all there is”.  While I believe that God can do big things right where you are, I also believe that he might have something else for us that is best suited not just for our talents but for the lifestyle we want to have.  We just have to look.  A few years ago I had Katheryn Sollman on our show.  She wrote a book called ambition redefined.  I’ll link to it on the show notes page on Your Life Rocks.com  Katheryn specializes in helping women find flexible work.  I can attest, there are so many opportunities out there for careers and companies….if you can imagine it, you can do it.  If you feel like you need a change, bring it before the Lord and start getting into action.

2. If you are where you want to be, reflect back on what your goals where at the beginning of the year before everything was turned upside down.  Is that still a viable goal?

Here is the thing about goals, we have the goal as is on the surface but underneath, there is the reason why we have that particular goal.  For example, you might have had a goal to get promoted, or at least be in a position of promotion when one comes available.  That is the surface goal.  But why was that your goal?  It might be for the extra security, the need or want for more pay, or the stimulation that comes from the extra responsibilities or the variety of work.  If your goal was offset by everything that has happened this year, is it possible to adjust your goal to still get the underlying reason for the goal?  If the reason you wanted to be promoted had to do with a change of responsibility, is it possible to still get that in another way?

It’s ok to change our goals.  In fact, I recommend refocusing your goal for the last 90 days of the year.  Your goal might be to just get things cleaned up for a fresh start to a new year.  It’s ok.  Think about what you really need right now and make that your goal.

 3.  Plan out your execution.  Inside the Life Balance Membership in the resources section under career, there is a worksheet that helps you plan your SOPs for your career.  It goes from the big picture down to quarterly, monthly, weekly, and daily planning.  When you decide on your new goal for the last 90- days of the year, it’s important to map out how you will get there with monthly, weekly, and daily check-ins and habits.

If you need help mapping it out, now might be a good time to get started with Life Balance Membership so you can get the full planning sheets and it comes with a training video as well.

Over on our Youtube channel, I recently did a video showing you how I organize the things that need to be done at work to stay really productive.  I walk you through a little bit of what I do monthly, weekly, and daily including the systems that I use.

You can also find these systems and programs inside the Fall Lifestyle Guide in the Your Life Rocks app.  If you don’t yet have the app, you can get it completely for free in your app store.  We have links to the app for apple and google down below.

During these times of transition, Sonia learned key principles and discovered necessary tools to help her excel every time.

Action Items and Tips From the Show

5 Tips For Acing The Job Search Process

  1. Rehearse your WINs from the past–Write down detailed stories of how you had success in your past positions. How you saw it benefit your employer. How you created a WIN for the customer as well as for yourself and your firm. This will help you have material for your interview and give you confidence that you are a viable candidate
  2. Take a baby step every day towards your career goal. Faith without works is dead according to James. You don’t have to do a lot of work to make a change..a little a day is enough. Consistency is the name of the game. If you don’t know where to start, use my 21 days of preparation checklist –provided to the podcast…or you can retrieve it from my website blessthework.com
  3. Pick a scripture to encourage yourself. Make it your mantra. Post it everywhere in your house and in your car. Carry it in your wallet. When you think you might lose your mind, use the scripture to remind you of God’s promises and to center and calm you.
  4. Dare to dream BIG. How can you find your dream job if you don’t have a dream? Take the time to intentionally dream. This will help you develop a strategy of who what when and where you feel you will succeed. Mustard seed faith is all you need.
  5. This is the best one of all! It is wise to spend at least 5 minutes a day communicating with God. Talking and Listening. Tune into the frequency of God within you to receive guidance and direction. God has a plan specifically for you and the only way to tap into that plan is to have a relationship with Him. Practice spending time in His presence. This is where my book comes in. God, Please Help Me Find A Job will prompt you in prayer about your situation.
