About Our Guest

Dr. Maylin is a wife, mother, and clinical child psychologist.  She spent the past 12 years working with children and families in inpatient units, residential settings, and outpatient care.  Through her clinical work, she discovered everyone is really just doing the best they can for the children they care the most about.  Through her personal experiences as a mom, she discovered that parenting is HARD.  Really Hard.  What she also discovered is that being PROACTIVE rather than REACTIVE has made a huge difference in her confidence as a parent and in her relationship with her children.  Dr. Maylin developed Raising Character as a way of integrating clinical knowledge and proactive parenting with the belief that raising children should be fun, enjoyable, and memorable. She’s on a mission to raise children we’ll admire as adults.

  • Let’s talk about WHY we’re using screen time with our children?
    • Educational purposes?
    • Boredom?
    • Quick break?
    • Reward for positive behavior?
  • Let’s remove judgment around this topic because we don’t always know the WHY behind why a parent is using screen time for their child.
  • No current studies that show the perfect amount of screen time and this is likely because it will vary for each child.
  • Some children are wired more hyperactive and are easily overstimulated. These kids will respond differently to screen time as it will likely reeve them up or increase their stimulation.
    • eye tics
    • jittery movements
    • increases in aggressive behaviors
    • Difficulties with sleep regulation
  • If you’re seeing any of the above negatives from screen time, here are some ideas:
    • Let your kids be bored. This sparks creativity.
    • Use real-life examples of education. Baking for math, scavenger hunts for science, etc.
    • Quiet time boxes for breaks
    • Experiences for rewards (get to go on an adventure, or read a book together, or pick the dessert for after dinner)

We have all been there.  The constant mess and chaos of our houses can leave us with overwhelm and guilt and can make us wonder if we have what it takes to make our house our home.  But there is good news!  The state of your house does not define you!  I know, easier said than done.  In this episode, we hear how to make that so with Jenny Welsh.  She shares 3 steps of her Chaotic to Clean Method that will help you bring God back into the state of your home and feel like you have it conquered.

After 6 years as a working mom, Jenny Welsh took a leap of faith and became a stay at home mom after her third child was born. Like too many women, she felt out of place in her own home and overwhelmed by the clutter. Combining her knack for organization with her experience creating operating procedures and processes, she developed the 7 step Chaotic To Clean method for overcoming the clutter in her home. Now, she teaches moms her people-first home organization method, so they can create space for more of what and who they love.

A recent study shared that 89% of working moms and 92% of stay at home moms felt overwhelmed by their homes. Those numbers get me fired up! It’s way too high!

Too often we associate our self-worth with the state of our homes. We have been conditioned by film, magazines and social media to identify others’ and our own worth based on our stuff. This is such a big lie. You are NOT defined by your things. Your clutter does not define you.

In the first three steps of Jenny’s 7 step Chaotic To Clean method, we work to shift our mindset away from feeling like we aren’t enough because we don’t have the “right” decor or stuff in our homes and focus on doing more with what we already have.

That one thing is God. Only God can fill the void that we are trying to fill with stuff.

Step 1: Pray

Invite God into your home and into your home organization plans. I like to ask what can I do with what I already have.

This is not about copying a look or style found in a magazine, but about creating a home that is perfect for you to thrive in. So that you can become who God created you to be without distraction.

Step 2: Pause

When we pause and really look at why our clutter keeps collecting, we can develop REAL solutions for maintaining our homes. The goal is no longer to have a clean home because we want to fill a void or feel a certain way about ourselves. The goal is to have a home that serves a purpose (and cleanliness is a by-product of that). So, when we pause, we are asking where in the cleanup process am I getting stuck? What about the way I currently organize my home does NOT work for my family’s needs?

Step 3:  Plan

What are 2-4 things that you want to achieve in your home? How do you want your family, guests and you to feel in your home? What are those words? Now, you can set out to intentionally create THAT. Not someone else’s ideas of what our homes should look like, but exactly what you and your family need today.

This is the step where it’s safe to open up Pinterest. But, not to copy. Maybe for the first time ever, you are looking at Pinterest for inspiration on how to achieve specific things!

Do you have a place to rest and recharge?  What if you had a place that you could go, like in your own house?  Often, our master bedrooms become a dumping ground so the rest of our homes stay put together.  If you are looking for more rest in your life, this just might be a project to tackle.  The great thing is, you can make this process easy or complex.  Today, we are joined by Monique Horb, a professional organizer at Organizing Your Chaos.  She is going to take us through step by step just like she was right there with you cleaning your space.  This is our last part of our Spring Cleaning series, I hope you enjoy!

About Our Guest

Monique Horb is the owner of Organizing Your Chaos. She helps busy women have more time, energy, and money by helping them organize their home, paper, and schedules.  This is done with in-home and virtual organizing sessions, paper organizing workshops and courses, and one on one coaching so that women can live their passion and purpose.
She began her business, Organizing Your Chaos, because of her desire to help people gain control of their homes and lives. Through life’s twists and turns, she learned that with an organized home she was able to face each day with hope and encouragement. She likes to say life is easier organized and wants to help others achieve that.
She lives in Valparaiso, IN with her husband of 25 years and is a mother to six children. She is a graduate of Taylor University with BA in Sociology & Psychology. She loves sunshine, Jesus, good books, sweet tea, and her family.

  1. Your vision. How do you want your bedroom to function? Decide what you want to use your bedroom for.
  2. Take out the trash.
  3. Take out the dirty laundry. Use a laundry basket, this will help contain the dirty clothes.
  4. Sort your clothes to decide what you love. Take them all out of your closet and dresser and try them ALL on! Does it FIT, does it FLATTER, is it FUN? Ask yourself, would someone else get more use out of it than me? If so, let it go: share, sell, donate.
  5. Does your closet function well? Do you need to add clothing rods or shelving?  Do you like the doors on or off your closet?  Can you put a dresser in your closet?
  6. Declutter your drawers, tops of dressers, chairs, cabinets, nightstands, and under your bed. Get rid of everything you don’t want or need in your bedroom. You may be surprised at what you have been storing here.
  7. Are you storing things in your bedroom that doesn’t belong? Remove them and put them away.
  8. Do you need furniture or do you have too much furniture? Does it function well or do you need to make changes? 
  9. Clean your room!

  • Let’s talk values for this:
    • What are your family’s values?
    • What are your child’s values?
    • Why are these values important to you and your child?
  • Next, let’s talk about behaviors:
    • What behaviors show these values?
    • Example if kindness is a value – what behaviors show kindness?
    • Example: if integrity is a value, then telling the truth is a behavior.
  • Finally, let’s link these two together:
    • We seek relationships with those who have similar values to us
    • We show our values in our behaviors
    • Let’s look for friends that show these behaviors we value
  • When our child’s friend’s do not seem healthy we can ask:
    • “Are your friend’s behaviors consistent with values that are important to you”
  • I find it’s best not to use force and to encourage choice to get the desired behavior
    • So encourage your child to make the best choices
    • Versus forcing them to not be friends with someone
    • Encouraging statements versus control and force
